POU Water Coolers: What Are They?
We’re all likely familiar with the normal “office water cooler”; it is a waist height machine with a giant bottle of water on top, with a tap to dispense hot water and another to dispense cold water.
Times have changed though, and so have water coolers! POU water coolers are “Point Of Use” water filtration systems; they differ greatly from their bottled water predecessors in that the water is purified on-site, and not pre-purified and bottled.
This type of technology has opened a whole new world for consumers; in area’s where it is not possible or safe to store large water bottles, you can not opt to fit a slim-line machine by simply adding it to your current plumbing set-up, and you now have access to cleaner and healthier water.
There are also various types of POU water cooler systems:
Gravity Devices – these are the outdated stone-filter type water “filters”. These have proven over the years to be a relatively unsafe and ineffective method to filter water – as the stones attract and absorb the contaminants you’re trying to rid yourself of. Try not to rely solely on this method for filtering your drinking water.
Inline Filters – these are the more modern solutions people have opted for. This includes the fitment of a membrane filter or sediment filtration filter to your main water supply – such as underneath the kitchen sink. A great idea if your objective is to have softer water for dishes and washing machines, but not the best choice for drinking water.
Reverse Osmosis Units are rather complex filtration systems. These are installed in the same manner an inline filter would be used. The Reverse Osmosis system is effective at removing particle contamination, but will not enhance the flavour of your water – nor remove and chemical components.
Ultraviolet Technologies use UV light to neutralize pathogens (microscopic contaminants) and defer the reproduction of these pathogens. Also, this type of filtration system is not going to assist in removing chemical or sediment contamination from your water.
Distillers are able to turn water into steam, and back again. Basically, a miniature water system in a machine. This removes the majority of biological pathogens and contaminants, but the process is time consuming and also will not remove chemical tastes or contaminants.
Purifying heating and cooling systems are the most effective, quickest and reliable solutions when you’re seeking a POU water cooler for drinking water purposes. The machines dispense room temperature, chilled or heated water at the touch of a button; the water is filtered through a leading technology sediment and membrane filter, and will remove chemical and microbial contaminants – however, pathogens are not removed from water when employing this type of filtration method.
