Mould is a foul-smelling and potentially dangerous fungus most commonly associated with porous materials like wood, plaster, grout and fabrics. Under the right conditions, though, mould can also grow on semi-porous and nonporous materials like glass, metal and also plastic. The speed at which mould grows on plastic depends on multiple factors.

Amount of Moisture

For mould to grow, moisture must present itself on the plastic surface. Since some plastics, like shower curtains, are semi-porous; while others, like food containers, are nonporous; not all plastics can grow mould as efficiently or as quickly. Because a semi-porous surface can trap moisture for long periods of time, while a nonporous surface cannot trap moisture, mould can grow much more easily with the former. For a nonporous surface to grow mould, it must have a consistent source of moisture, like a puddle of water left for an extended period of time.

Amount of Nutrients

Mould will also not grow on plastic unless it has a nutrient source. Since plastic does not provide natural nutrients, like cellulose, for mould spores, mould must rely on old food particles, dirt or soil to provide ample nutrients. For instance, it might grow inside a plastic container where a residue of rotting food remains, or inside a used plastic water bottle that has not been rinsed clean. The more soil and organic residue present, the faster mould can grow.

Off the bat, it’s safe to say that tap water may actually be detrimental to the lifespan and “grow-ability” of your plants; no, we don’t suggest using bottled water to water your gardens – we understand that watering such a large space with anything other than natural rain or tap water is just not going to work.

However, when it comes to indoor and house plants, we might want to consider using a different type of water to keep them going.

 

Water for House Plants

“Rainwater and bottled spring water are great at helping plants grow, but sugar water and salt water actually hurt growing plants. Tap water and distilled water may not hurt the plants, but you’ll notice they don’t grow as tall and proud as the plants that were fed rain and spring water.”

Spring water contains natural minerals which are needed for optimal growth in plants. Using distilled water might not have any other effect than keeping the plant alive, due to the nature of the water itself.

Too many people have believed that adding sugar or salt to plant s- especially roses- will allow them to grow faster and bigger. This is actually a hindrance on the plant and will not reap any positive effect – it may in fact cause root rot.

Some have suggested using Epsom slats to grow plants faster – although this hasn’t been proven – it is a better bet than using ordinary table salt or refined sugar.

Purified water allows the plant the chance to absorb the hydration without the need to filter anything out, making it’s growing process that much easier. Adding plant nutrition sticks or liquid to your indoor plants will aid in its growth – but in summary – using spring water or purified water to keep your plants and flowers growing is the best bet.

The ice tray (in my opinion, at least) is one of the most underrated innovations of the 21st century. It’s a genius invention, to be frank! A tray that you can freeze almost any liquid in; use it to freeze water for ice, freeze your home made baby food, preserve your herbs by freezing them in olive oil inside ice trays – the list really is endless.

 

But do we give the actual ice tray enough credit? Methinks not.

The ice tray has evolved over the years, let’s check it out:

 

  • From the 19th century, our earthly predecessor used ice picks to simply hack away at glaciers to make igloo’s and keep fish icy cold.
  • The 1930’s saw the first introduction of an actual ice tray; an unnecessarily long wait if you ask me!  But they were onto something smart back then; the first ice-trays were made out of aluminium, meaning the ice stayed perfectly chilled when in direct contact with the cold, but the warmth of your hands underneath the aluminium tray easily released the ice.
  • 30 years on, the 1960’s saw the first i9ntrocution of the plastic ice tray. Instead of the immovable aluminium tray, the polymer plastic ice cube tray was the first of it’s kind to be able to bend and mould, and easily “pop” the ice out of the tray. These are still around to this day, but there have still been further enhancements.
  • The 80’s was a time for weird and wonderful inventions, not forgetting the topped ice tray. Yes, it seems a little senseless to add a covering to an ice tray – but the implementation of this means that you can stack your ice trays before the water freezes! That’s actually pretty genius if you ask me…
  • The new millennium was all about funkiness. The ice tray didn’t evade this movement at all. We saw the very first silicone ice tray – and we were floored. No more “convincing” an ice cube to pop out your ice tray, nope. You simply pry it out. Personal best for me.
