Quality Water Bottles for a Top-Quality Brand

On those hot summer days when you reach into the fridge for an ice-cold bottle of water, or line-up at the office water cooler for a cool refreshing drink, have you ever wondered where those multi-coloured bottles come from?

When it comes to Aquazania, their bottles are produced by PETRA (PET Resin Association).

What is PET?

This stands for polyethylene terephthalate, and it is a type of polyester. This is moulded into food packaging containers and plastic bottles for beverages as well as other consumer products. PET plastic bottles are a popular packaging choice for water, juice, soft drinks, shampoo, mouthwash, liquid hand soap and an extensive range of other products.

Why are PET products so popular?

Aside from being strong, light in weight, economical and shatterproof, PET products are hygienic, resistant to attacks and damage caused by micro-organisms and will not biologically degrade.

Are PET bottles and containers safe?

PET containers and bottles have been tested and undergone extensive studies and, as a result, they have been approved as safe by health and safety agencies around the world, including the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the European Food Safety Authority. Studies have also shown that PET bottles and containers are BPA free and they do not react with beverages and food.

How to tell the difference between PET bottles and other plastics

At the bottom or on the side of PET containers you will find a mould showing a 1 surrounded by a triangle of ‘chasing arrows’. Below this triangle, you will see the acronym PET or PETE.

Can PET containers and bottles be recycled?

They certainly can. Containers, bottles and jars can be recycled and used for various other products. PET products which are recycled are used for food and beverage bottles and containers, carpets and clothing, industrial strapping and many other items which people use during their daily lives.

With several decades of experience, PET continues to supply quality products to top quality brands.

Water, water, everywhere

If you live anywhere around Johannesburg, or have switched on the news at any time over the past week, you’re sure to have heard about the flash floods that gripped Gauteng during the second week of November. Sadly, there were several fatalities and many homes and businesses were damaged during the storms.

After months of experiencing a hard-hitting drought, many people breathed a collective sigh of relief when the rain started to fall. However, does the heavy rainfall mean the drought is over once and for all?

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Despite the heavy thunderstorms, we’ve only just begun the recovery process and we still need to keep water conservation as a top priority.

Reports have stated that since Monday, November 14, the Vaal Dam is now registering at 30% capacity. Although this is a marked improvement, it’s still a far-cry from the 50% we desperately need in order to reach a sustainable level.

This is due to the fact that not nearly as much water fell in the catchment areas for the Vaal Dam as we saw falling throughout Johannesburg. Fortunately, a substantial amount did make its way to the dam.

As a result of the drought and the low water levels, the sluice gates of the Sterkfontein Dam were recently opened in order to send desperately needed water to the Vaal Dam.

As South African citizens, we need to always remember that we live in a country that is prone to dry spells and the threat of water shortages is always a possibility. As a result, everyone is reminded to continue using water sparingly.

Residents need to make the most of storms when they occur and leave out buckets to collect rain water which can be used at a later stage. Rain water which is collected during storms can be used to water plants, wash cars, flush toilets and much more – all without having to turn on your taps once.

Water restrictions are still in place as well as low water pressure within our homes. However, by remaining vigilant, we can allow the current weather cycle to boost our water supplies up to a reliable and constant level.

Aquazania gives generous donation to those in need

It is said that a person or a business can be measured by how they act during a crisis. Aquazania recently proved their worth when they reached out and gave a generous donation in order to assist victims of the devastating flash floods which hit the country.

During the first weeks of November, South Africa was hit hard by severe thunderstorms and flash floods. Sadly, several people lost their lives and a large number of homes, businesses and vehicles were badly damaged.

Saddened by the tragic plight of all those who had lost their homes, Aquazania decided to take action and assist. In response to the disaster, Aquazania donated 400 of their 22 litre bottles of purified water to staff members from Busamed Private Hospital Orthopaedic and Oncology Centre, who are working tirelessly and doing their best to help victims of the flash floods. The hospital is being assisted by the caring officials from Gift of The Givers. Aside from the 400 bottles of water from Aquazania, Busamed and Gift of the Givers also donated food hampers as well.

To see more photos of the generous donation and the handover, take a look at Busamed’s Facebook page.

Water Rationing Now a Reality

After several warnings in the media, people’s worst fears have finally become a reality and water rationing has been implemented. The metro will begin with water rationing measures from Monday, November 7, 2016.

Due to several factors, including non-compliance from some businesses and homes, the Vaal Dam levels have dropped to 25%. This comes after residents and business owners were requested to reduce their water usage by 15%. On Friday, November 4, Germiston City News reported that residents who took it upon themselves to try and save water, managed to save, on average, 3.5% a week. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the metro now has to take drastic measures.

What Is Water Rationing?

While this is still a relatively new concept, it is similar to load shedding – a measure South Africans are all too familiar with. In essence, water supplies will be temporarily cut off in certain areas for set periods of time. The suggested cut-off times are between 21:00 and 05:00. If we do not heed the warnings and drastically conserve water, we could see these restrictions spill over into daytime hours.

Citizens will be penalised if they do no adhere to the existing restrictions, such as not watering gardens from 06:00 – 18:00, not filling swimming pools and not using hose pipes to wash cars.

We recently saw a water supply interruption in high-lying areas of Kyalami as reservoir levels dropped drastically. Water pressure levels have been reduced throughout all major city areas in an attempt to conserve the little we have left.

While rainfall is predicted in abundance in the coming months, there is no sure-fire way to say when we, as South Africans, can breathe a sigh of relief and see the drought come to an end. Businesses are urged to reassess priorities and switch off any water-powered devices which are not entirely necessary.

Businesses operating with car washes on their premises are urged to section off that area and discourage their employees from unnecessarily washing their cars, inside and outside of business hours.

The situation is dire and everyone is urged to start saving water now.
