So you’ve bought yourself some filter coffee with a plunger to boot, and you’re wanting to learn now it works. Doing so will get you one step closer to becoming a coffee aficionado who can wow their loved ones by making a series of incredible different brews. Coffee plunger coffee can be far more delicious than using instant powder scoops, and even though it might be a bit of a slower method, it’s definitely worth carving out a couple of extra minutes in your morning for the overall experience. The slower brew is what gives it its rich, decadent taste, after all.
Step 1: Preheat The Coffee Plunger & Grind Your Beans
Take off the lid and the plunger, and fill the glass just with boiling water. As the jug preheats, it’s a good opportunity to grind your coffee beans. Start with medium consistency, and then tweak for your first few brews to hit the perfect sweet spot for you. Remember that if it is too finely ground, it may be substantially more bitter. Pre-ground coffee is fine, but it’s always a better idea to go fresh for the best possible taste.
Step 2: Add Coffee To The Plunger & Add Warm (Not Boiling) Water
Pour out the water in the glass jug now that it is warm. Add the correct amount of coffee to the plunger (roughly 75g per liter or one teaspoon per cup should be good to start). This can vary depending on the strength of the coffee, the mineral composition of your water, and how finely ground the beans are. Next, add warm water to the mix. Don’t add boiling water at this stage, as it may burn the grounds and spoil the entire brew.
Step 3: Close The Lid & Plunge Gently
Pull the plunger all the way to the top and put the lid back on top of the glass jar. Give it four to five minutes to infuse properly before you start to plunge the coffee gently. To do so, push it down slowly to separate the coffee grounds from your brew. Be careful not to crush the grounds at the bottom of the jug as this can also spoil the party. The key here is not to rush, and to take a moment to enjoy the fact that you’re making yourself something special and unique, in a bid to start your day off on the right note.
Step 4: Pour Your Coffee & Serve Away
Once this is done, you’re ready to pour your coffee into cups and to serve it to yourself and others. Remember to keep mild, sugar and sweeteners around in case you want to experiment with the taste a little. Getting the balance 100% right will require some curiosity, as well as a bit of experience. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you’re just starting out.
