How to Treat Alkaline Water

Water that has been treated for being too alkaline.

Alkaline water is a hot topic these days. Some experts suggest that drinking slightly alkaline water can have many health benefits in the long run. Others do whatever they can to treat alkaline water to get it “back in balance”, so to speak. Although the verdict is still out on this one, you may be curious to learn more about it, which is why we’re here. Today, we’ll talk about exactly what alkaline water is, the potential benefits of drinking it over and above other types of water, and how it gets treated to get it back to neutral.

What is Alkaline Water?

Strictly speaking, alkaline water refers to water with a higher pH level than the standard 7 of normal drinking water. Alkaline water typically has a pH of 8 or 9. As a result of this, the logic behind its suggested health benefits comes from the idea that it helps to potentially neutralise acid in the drinker’s body. The pH alone is not enough to determine overall alkalinity of water. It also has to contain alkaline minerals and negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP). This latter is what makes it an antioxidant. The more negative ORP is, the more likely it is to have antioxidant qualities.

Neutralising Alkaline Water

It’s possible to neutralise alkaline water based on specific individual needs. Some people may wish to bring high alkaline (pH levels of over 8 or 9) water down to the suggested healthier range. Others may want to reduce “safe” alkaline water back to a pH of 7 (neutral). The best way to correct slightly alkaline water is to use carbon dioxide. A way to go about doing so easily is to install a special ion exchange unit or a chemical feed pump system that injects a weak acid solution to the water supply. Both will give satisfactory results, but often it’s easier to source water directly from a supplier to mitigate any potential risks or deviations.

The Effects of Drinking Alkaline Water

A single bottle of alkaline water won’t make a significant impact on your body in the long run. Drinking only alkaline water will definitely bring about change, as the body has to work harder to maintain its pH over time. The result is the release of more digestive enzymes and gastric juices, both of which come with their own pros and cons. Keep in mind that water with high alkalinity has a very bitter taste, which should be an indicator that it isn’t quite in the right range just yet. Another factor to keep in mind, especially if you have a permanent fixture in mind, is that highly acidic water may corrode metal pipes or even dissolve them, given enough time.
